Man steals car with child asleep in backseat

A two-year-old is safe after a wild ride this morning in Merriam.

Officers were called to an address in the 7200 block of Eby Drive shortly just after 3:20 a.m. on reports of a vehicle being stolen with a sleeping child in the backseat.

The vehicle, a silver 2007 Toyota Camry was left running when the suspect jumped in the driver's seat and sped off.

Witnesses told police that the suspect was a white male, in his 20s, approximately 5ft 11in tall. He was last seen wearing a brown jacket and blue jeans.

A Lenexa officer located the vehicle with the child still inside, just after 3:30 a.m. on Interstate 35 near Johnson Drive. The suspect was not with the vehicle.

Merriam officers requested assistance from other agencies to set a large perimeter and search with a K-9.

Officers from Lenexa, Olathe, Overland Park, Prairie Village, and Shawnee assisted with holding a perimeter. A K-9 unit was brought in from the Olathe Police Department.

The search was called off at 4:10 a.m. with no suspects located.

Man dies after ATV collides with deer, woman remains critical

The 22-year-old man involved in an ATV crash near Vinland died as a result of his injuries on Sunday, according to Douglas County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Lieutenant Steve Lewis.

Hospital officials at the University of Kansas Hospital tell my reporting partners at the Lawrence Journal-World that the 19-year-old female remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Two people were critically injured when their ATV struck a deer in rural Douglas County early Saturday.

A driver found the ATV, on its side, in the middle of North 700 Road around 4:25 Saturday morning and called 911 for help. The crash was located between East 1600 Road and East 1650 Road, near Vinland.

The scene is approximately two and a half miles north of Baldwin City or approximately five miles south of Lawrence.

Deputies were first to arrive on the scene and found a man and a woman, both unconscious, after being thrown from the ATV.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical triaged both of the injured to be in critical condition. First responders from Baldwin City Fire and Lawrence Fire are also on scene.

A 22-year-old man was transported by ambulance to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. A 19-year-old woman was transported by ambulance to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.

Life Star and other medical helicopters are grounded due to current weather conditions.

Overland Park Regional spokesperson Chris Hamele tells the Journal-World that the man remains in critical condition Saturday afternoon.

The woman is in serious condition according to Douglas County Sheriff's Office public information officer Steve Lewis.

Lawrence shooting suspect charged with attempted murder; victim released from hospital

Douglas County prosecutors have charged Dashawn C. Clayborn, 22, of Kansas City, Kansas with attempted first-degree murder, automobile burglary, theft of a vehicle, attempting to elude police, criminal damage to property, and driving while his license was suspended.

Prosecutors allege that Clayborn was involved in a fight in the 3000 block of Steven Drive on January 30th. During the fight, Stephen Patterson, 27, of Lawrence, was shot twice.

Patterson was flown to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas with critical injuries.

According to a Lawrence Police Department news release, received on February 2nd, Stephen Patterson is no longer hospitalized.

My reporting partners at the Lawrence Journal-World report that Clayborn's bond has been set at $100,000.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has not released Dashawn Clayborn's booking photo.

Officers were called shortly before 12:40 Friday morning to the 3000 block of Steven Drive. On arrival officers located a person with a gunshot wound to the back and a second possible wound to the jaw.

Fire Medical crews reported the victim to be in critical condition and requested a Life Star helicopter to respond. The helicopter landed on the north side of West Middle School, 2700 Harvard Road, and transported the victim to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.

The Journal-World's Caitlin Doornbos was with police at the intersection of Wellington Road and Steven Drive, where officers used a public address speaker in attempt to contact anyone inside 3009 Steven Drive. An armored police vehicle arrived at the scene shortly before 2 a.m.

Police received a search warrant for the address around 3 a.m. and entered the home around 3:10.

Caitlin Doornbos reported that police searched the home, but did not find anyone inside.

Lawrence Police Department spokesperson Sergeant Trent McKinley says, "a 22-year-old, Kansas City, Kansas man was arrested shortly before 8 a.m. this morning following a vehicle pursuit on K-10 highway that ended near Eudora."

McKinley says around 7:40 a.m. officers received information on a vehicle, left running in a driveway near 24th and Alabama Streets, being stolen. An officer spotted the vehicle on East 23rd Street and attempted to stop it.

"A pursuit ensued, reaching speeds of approximately 100 miles-per-hour before the suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed near K-10 and Church Street in Eudora," McKinley said.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries sustained in the crash.

McKinley says, "the suspect will be transported to the Douglas County Jail on a number of charges, following his medical treatment."

Police asking for tips in Sunday morning stabbing

Lawrence Police detectives continue to investigate a stabbing that occurred early Sunday morning and are asking for the public's assistance.

A 19-year-old man remained hospitalized in stable condition at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Sunday evening, after he was stabbed in an attempted robbery around 2:20 Sunday morning.

Officers located the victim near West Sixth Street and Monterey Way. Police say the victim sustained numerous injuries, including stab wounds.

Medics transported the victim to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.

In a news release on Monday, Sergeant Trent McKinley says, "investigators believe the incident began after the victim left a nightclub in the 1000 block of Massachusetts Street just before 2:00 a.m. The victim conversed with individuals before entering a vehicle near the nightclub."

Police believe the suspects intended to rob the victim and began beating on him as the vehicle traveled through downtown Lawrence.

According to the news release, "the occupants of the vehicle were described as a black male driver, a black or Hispanic mixed race male, a "short" Hispanic female, and the white male victim."

"Near Eighth and Rhode Island, east of downtown, the vehicle stopped briefly and the victim attempted to flee. The suspects fought with the victim and pulled him back into the vehicle which then left the area," according to McKinley.

A witness described the vehicle as a dark colored, older sedan, in good condition.

In the area of Eighth and Monterey Way, the victim was able to get out of the vehicle and run from the suspects.

"Blood was located outside one home in the area, therefore officers are searching the area for additional evidence."

Shawnee Police are investigating after an SUV sideswiped a parked car and the crashed head-on into a utility pole, leaving the driver seriously injured early Saturday.

A neighbor called 911 around 1:40 Saturday morning, after a Cadillac Escalade crashed head-on into a utility pole at the T-intersection of West 55th and Flint Streets.

Johnson County Med-Act reported the SUV had sustained significant damage and the front airbags had deployed.

The driver was the only person in the vehicle. He was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.

Police believe speed played a role in the crash and alcohol played a role in the crash.

At the scene, it was clear that the SUV rear-ended a car parked on Flint Street. The impact forced the parked car to collided with another vehicle parked on the street. The impact sheared off part of a front wheel, brake assembly, and axle of the speeding SUV. The SUV continued north and crashed head-on into the utility pole. The pole was split, up the middle and will need to be replaced. The crash did not disrupt power to any nearby homes or street lights.

Late Saturday morning, the damaged utility pole remains, now marked with a large red 'X'.

Shawnee Police activity logs show that the driver was found to be DUI. The driver remains hospitalized late Saturday morning.
