Officer needs assistance call escalates to standoff

October 5 - 9 p.m. Update:
Shane Tucker has been arraigned on five charges, three are felony charges and two are misdemeanors. Theses charges include, two counts of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, two counts of Criminal Damage to Property and Domestic Battery. His bond was set at $10,000. His next court date is set for October 13th.

October 4 - 11:30 a.m. Update:
As of just after 10 a.m. this morning Shane Tucker was booked into the Johnson County Jail. According to booking records he faces numerous charges. He is yet to make his first court appearance to be formally arraigned.

Gardner Police tell Operation 100 News, 27-year-old, Shane Tucker is in custody facing charges of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer and Domestic Violence charges. Police were called to an apartment complex in the 700 block of E. Lincoln Lane shortly after 12:40 a.m. on reports of a domestic disturbance. Officers arrived and spotted a man who was wielding several knives just outside of the front door of one apartment.

Reports indicate that several knives were thrown at Police from the front door of the residence. The man retreated into the apartment. Reports indicate that there is an 11-month-old child inside the apartment with the suspect, however officers have not confirmed these reports. A short time after the male suspect ran into the apartment, officers at that scene reported gunshots being fired. Officers at the scene called for emergency assistance at that time. Numerous outside agencies responded from all over Johnson County.

Officers from; Gardner, Spring Hill, Johnson County Sheriff's Office, Kansas Highway Patrol, Olathe, Lenexa, Shawnee and Mission were all involved on the initial call for assistance.

Gardner Police have confirmed that shots were fired, believed to be from inside the apartment.

Patrol officers established a perimeter around the apartment building and have evacuated neighboring apartments in the complex.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office tactical team arrived at the scene around 2 a.m. as the man remains barricaded inside the residence. The Sheriff's Office will only say that they have made contact with the suspect inside the apartment and hope to maintain that communication.

3 a.m. only 1 minor injury has been reported and that is believed to be a result of the initial domestic disturbance that occurred prior to Gardner Police being called. Tactical Medics from Johnson County Med-Act are on scene standing by.

4:20 a.m. the 11-month-old has been reportedly been handed out of a window to the Tactical Team who is taking the child to a waiting Med-Act unit for assessment at the scene.

4:58 a.m. the 11-month-old has been checked by Med-Act and is with family.

5:43 a.m. the male suspect was taken into custody outside of the front door of the apartment. He was tased by the tactical team.

5:55 a.m. suspect being prepared to be transported to hospital for a "self inflicted knife wound."

Gunshot to the leg results in serious injuries

Shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday morning, Miami County Sheriff Deputies and EMS crews were called to the 1000 block of North 2nd Street East in Louisburg on reports of a subject with a gunshot wound. Deputies arrived on scene and confirmed that the scene was secure for Medics to respond in.

Upon arrival at the address, Medics confirmed that the subject had a serious gunshot wound to a leg. Initially a Life Flight Eagle medical helicopter was dispatched to respond due to the distance between trauma centers and the scene. That helicopter was cancelled after Medics arrived on scene. 

The Sheriff's Department continues to investigate and few details are available regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident. No other injuries were reported.

Fatal Overland Park duplex fire

Today, Overland Park Fire Department Investigators have released the cause of this fire is believed to have been related to an electrical issue in the duplex's attic.

The Overland Park Fire Department is investigating a duplex fire in the 10200 block of west 86th Street. The fire broke out around 10:50 p.m. Saturday night. Responding fire crews were advised that a young child was in an upstairs bedroom and other residents were unable to get to that bedroom to rescue the child.

Upon arrival at the scene, fire crews reported smoke showing from a two story duplex. Firefighters were able to rescue the young female from the second floor. She was found to be in extremely critical condition with second degree burns to all of her body. She was transported to an area hospital where a short time later she passed away.

Overland Park Fire says four others, including two boys and another girl, were able to escape from the residence prior to the arrival of fire crews. The fire was quickly extinguished with the structure only sustaining minimal damage. One other child received treatment at the scene for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.

Preliminary reports indicate that there was a smoke detector in the duplex but, the battery had been removed after the unit began chirping to indicate a low battery level, about a week ago.

Monday morning investigators say it appears the fire originated in the bedroom where the child was found by firefighters. The child has been identified as 8-year-old, Taylor Jackson, who was at the duplex spending the night with a friend. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Investigators remind the public that October is Fire Prevention Month.

October is Fire Prevention Month

The American Red Cross and local Fire Departments across the area are reminding the public that October is Fire Prevention Month and encouraging everyone to take steps to lessen the risk of a fire in their home.

The National Fire Protection Association says there are between 350,000 and 400,000 house fires in the United States every year. Making house fires a larger threat to families than floods.

The American Red Cross encourages people to remember two key fire safety steps: installing smoke alarms and developing a fire escape plan.

It is recommended that each and every smoke alarm in a residence is checked, by pushing the test button, at least once a month and replacing the batteries every year, or as needed. Fire escape plans should include at least two escape routes from every room in the home and a convenient meeting place at a safe distance from the home. This escape plan should be practiced at least twice a year and revised as necessary. Families are reminded to pay particular attention to developing and regularly practicing escape plans for children and older adults.

Additional recommendations include:

• Keeping matches and lighters away from and out of the reach of children.
• Don't leave the kitchen or especially your home while you're frying, grilling or broiling food.
• Once you are out, stay out! Call the fire department from a neighbor's home.

1 deceased after sustaining gunshot wound

The Olathe Police Department is investigating an incident that left a subject deceased this morning. Police were dispatched to the 15900 block of west 145th Terrace just before 4:20 a.m. this morning. Officers arrived and secured the scene for Johnson County Med-Act to enter the scene.

A Med-Act Battalion Chief pronounced the subject deceased of an apparent gunshot wound. Several subjects who were in the house at the time of the incident were taken to the Police Station for questioning.

No other injuries were reported and Police are not releasing any further details regarding this incident.
