Police were called to the store, located at 23000 West 83rd Street, at 5:55 a.m. Sunday. The clerk told dispatchers that two black males, one armed with a handgun, had robbed the store. Shawnee police said Monday that the men entered the business wearing masks, then displayed a handgun and demanded money. The suspects stole cash from the registers and cigarettes from the business before fleeing the scene in a silver Dodge Stratus.
The vehicle was later found abandoned just off of 83rd Street and Woodsonia Drive in Lenexa. Shawnee police said that the vehicle had been stolen in Kansas City, Mo., earlier that night.
Officers from Shawnee and Lenexa, along with Troopers from the Kansas Highway Patrol set up a large perimeter as they searched with a K-9 and Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter. The search was called off around 7:50 a.m., with no suspects located.
Officers temporarily blocked off all access to the Westside Family Church, 8500 Woodsonia Drive, as this is the area where the suspect vehicle was found. That access was reopened when the search was called off.
One suspect is described as a black male, 5’6” - 5’8” tall, and 140-160 lbs. He was wearing dark colored jeans and a black sweatshirt with “Nike” across the chest, according to police. The suspect was also described as wearing white gloves and white tennis shoes.
