Shawnee Police are investigating after an early morning accident near 55th Street and Clare road in Shawnee. The accident was reported just after 2 a.m., this morning.

Initial reports indicate that the vehicle was westbound on 55th Street when it crashed through a fence and into a wooded area, as 55th Street ends at Clare road. The driver of the vehicle was able to free himself and walk to a nearby residence to call 911. The only other occupant of the vehicle was a front seat passenger, who was unconscious in the vehicle as units arrived on the scene.

Shawnee Police, Fire and Johnson County Med-Act arrived and reported the vehicle had sustained "very heavy damage." The vehicle's driver is said to have serious injuries, while the passenger is said to have suffered critical injuries. Police have called out their Traffic Safety Unit to investigate the accident and the circumstances surrounding it.

Both the driver and passenger are reported to be males between 21 and 22-years-old. The men were both wearing their seat belts according to Police.

Officers continue to investigate whether or not alcohol played a role in the accident. Johnson County Med-Act did report the smell of alcohol from the driver.
