National Police Week 2011

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls, as National Police Week determining the dates for National Police Week 2011 — Sunday, May 15th through Saturday, May 21st.

For the past 23 years, an annual Candlelight Vigil is held at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C. The Candlelight Vigil is traditionally held on May 13th, regardless of the day of the week on which it falls. Every six or seven years, May 13th falls prior to the official start of National Police Week, as it did in 2011. Each year the Fraternal Order of Police and the Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary host The Peace Officers Memorial Day Service at the U.S. Capitol. This service is always held on May 15th, regardless of the day of the week on which it falls. The Memorial Service began in 1982 as a gathering in Senate Park of approximately 120 survivors and supporters of law enforcement.
