The accident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. at the intersection of Santa Fe Trail Drive and 101st Terrace.
Lenexa Police say the officer was driving south on Santa Fe Trail Drive when the driver of the Honda Civic ran the stop sign, in front of the officer, and was struck by the patrol vehicle. The officer was on routine patrol and was not on the way to a call, according to a police officer at the crash scene.
Master Police Officer Dan Friesen says the driver of the Honda Civic was transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The officer was not treated for injuries.
The police vehicle ended up partially down a small embankment, just short of the railroad tracks. The Civic came to a stop a short distance south of the intersection and was heavily damaged on the driver's side. Both vehicles had airbags deploy in the crash.
The Shawnee Police Department is assisting with the accident investigation, due to a Lenexa officer being involved.
