Man critical after truck hits tree

A man was critically injured when his pickup truck slammed into a tree and caught fire early Monday.

The accident was reported just after 2 a.m., on 79th Street east of Belinder Avenue in Prairie Village.

Johnson County Med-Act arrived to report the truck was on its side with very heavy damage and one person trapped inside.

A resident of the area tells Operation 100 News that the driver appeared to be a man in his 20's.

The injured man was transported to the University of Kansas Hospital in critical condition. His injuries are said to include serious trauma and first-degree burns to his upper body.

Prairie Village Police have called for assistance from the Shawnee Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit for accident investigation.

Dispatchers say 79th Street will remain closed between Belinder and Booth until officers complete the on-scene accident investigation.

Gasoline tanker crash in Leawood

A large hazardous material response is on scene on the entrance ramp from State Line Road to westbound Interstate 435 in Leawood.

Authorities say the crash occurred around 1:40 a.m. after a tractor trailer blew a tire and left the highway, crashing in the grassy area between westbound Interstate 435 and the entrance ramp from State Line Road to the highway.


The truck was carrying 5500 gallons of gasoline and 200 gallons of diesel fuel at the time of the crash, which resulted in a spill estimated to involve 150-200 gallons of gasoline.

The driver of the tractor trailer was injured in the crash and transported to an area hospital by Johnson County Med-Act, he is said to be in serious condition.

Fire and hazardous material crews from Leawood, Overland Park, Johnson County, and Johnson County Med-Act responded to the scene and working to contain the spill. Authorities say the accident occurred in Kansas City, Missouri and then crossed State Line Road coming to rest on the Kansas side.

The on-ramp is expected to be closed for an extended period of time. Two lanes of westbound Interstate 435 are also closed while crews work to clean up the spill.

Johnson County Environmental Department has arrived on the scene. The Kansas Division of Emergency Management and State Fire Marshal's Office are being updated of the situation.

Carter Energy is the company responsible for the tractor trailer and their on-site representative has requested an Olathe company, Haz-Mat Response, to respond and assist with clean up of the scene. That company's full response arrived on scene at 4:45 a.m..

Kansas City, Missouri Police confirm the accident occurred on their side of State Line Road.

At 2:37 a.m., Fire Department officials requested Law Enforcement respond to remove a "cameraman" who is attempting to approach the scene on foot from Interstate 435.

As of 5:42 a.m., Haz-Mat crews have began off loading the gasoline still inside the crashed tanker to another tanker truck.

At 7:30 a.m., Haz-Mat crews completed removing the gasoline and diesel fuel from the tanker and allowed KDOT to reopen the two lanes of Interstate 435 which had been blocked since 2:30 a.m..

The entrance ramp is expected to remain closed until around 8:30 a.m. according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
