Prairie Village officer injured during foot chase

One man was arrested, and another eluded Prairie Village officers after running from a traffic stop near 75th Street and Mission Road just after 2:15 a.m. Saturday.

Recorded radio traffic indicates an officer made a traffic stop in a driveway in the 4000 block of West 75th Street at 2:18 a.m. The suspect parked his vehicle in a driveway, then two men ran from the car.

The driver ran north into a backyard, while the passenger ran south across 75th Street.

Corporal Mark Brown of the Prairie Village Police Department confirms an officer made a traffic stop on a vehicle that was seen speeding on 75th Street, and two men ran from that vehicle.

"We got one person into custody that we believe to be the passenger," Cpl. Brown says. "The driver, we don't have in custody."

The passenger was arrested on the west side of Shawnee Mission East High School. The driver reportedly ran north, jumping fences into backyards. Corporal Brown says both men are younger black males.

"During the course of the foot chase, one of the officers did injure their knee," Cpl. Brown said.

The injured officer was evaluated on the scene by Johnson County Med-Act and then transported to an area hospital by a fellow officer. Corporal Brown says the injury is not believed to be serious.

A K-9 unit from the Olathe Police Department was brought in to assist with the search of backyards. Officers from Fairway, Mission, and Roeland Park also responded to assist in holding a perimeter for the K-9 search.

Prairie Village officers were seen recovering a handgun from the backseat to the Dodge Magnum the suspects allegedly ran from.

Kansas City area home improvement company owner arrested after "assist the officer" call in JoCo

Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies arrested a man after responding on a reported "pending disturbance" late Friday evening.

Sheriff's Office booking logs show, 42-year-old, John M. Bartrom was arrested at 11:03 p.m.

Bartrom is the owner of Jericho Home Improvements according to the company website and lists himself as the chief executive officer and founder of the company on LinkedIn.

Johnson County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer, Deputy Claire Canaan confirms deputies were initially called to the home at 18720 Mission Road, in Stilwell, shortly before 10 p.m.

Bartrom and his wife are listed as owners of the home on Mission Road according to Johnson County property records.

Deputies were initially called to the home at 18720 Mission Road in Stilwell, by a family member who did not want an intoxicated man to leave the house in a vehicle, according to recorded radio traffic.

Recorded radio traffic indicates the man was able to leave in a 2017 Nissan Titan, registered to the business, before deputies could arrive at the address.

The truck reportedly returned to the home about 10:40 p.m. and the male driving went inside the house.

At 10:54, deputies requested additional units respond, saying that they have contact with the man inside the house, but he's "argumentative."

"While on scene at the house, the subject became uncooperative and began fighting with deputies resulting in an 'assist the officer' to go out," Deputy Canaan said in an emailed response to questions.

An 'assist the officer' is a call for emergency assistance from any nearby law enforcement.

The 'assist the officer' was canceled about two minutes later, with deputies reporting the suspect is detained.

Officers from the Overland Park Police Department and Johnson County Parks Police also assisted with the call. Several other agencies had officers responding, who were disregarded when Bartrom was taken into custody.

Radio traffic from one deputy, who requested an ambulance for Bartrom, stated there were "four taser deployments," and a "possible head injury."

Deputy Canaan confirms no deputies or officers were injured during the call.

On Saturday, John M. Bartrom was charged with; battery of a law enforcement officer with contact, obstruction of the legal process, and DUI. All charges are listed as misdemeanors.

Bartrom was booked into the Johnson County Adult Detention Center at 5:08 Saturday morning. He posted $7,500, through a bonding company, and was released from custody at 5:27 Saturday evening.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, August 20 in Johnson County District Court.

Operation 100 News has reached out to Jericho Home Improvements for comment. These messages have not been returned.

Man killed in early morning house fire

A man in his 50's is dead after an early morning fire inside a Mission Hills home.

Firefighters were called to the home at 3616 West 69th Street at 2:12 a.m. Tuesday.

"An elderly female resident reports that she heard the smoke alarm from her second-floor bedroom, came down to the main level of the home, found her son in the area of the fire which was located in the living room," Johnson County Consolidated Fire District No. 2 Fire Chief Tony Lopez said in a news release.

Lopez says the woman is in her early 90's and her son was in his 50's.

"Due to conditions, she was unable to see her phone to call 911 and exited the home to seek help from the neighbor," Chief Lopez said.

Police officers from the Prairie Village Police Department were first to arrive on the scene.

Radio traffic from those officers indicated they were prepared to go inside the house to attempt to rescue the man but were unable to get inside due to the extreme heat.

Chief Lopez says firefighters arrived to find smoke showing from the front of the house. Firefighters entered the house through a side door and worked to quickly extinguish the fire.

Firefighters pronounced the man dead at the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the CFD2's Fire Marshal with the assistance of the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office.

"CFD2 appreciates the strong partnership we have in Johnson County and the help automatically received from professionals with Overland Park Fire Department, Shawnee Fire Department, and Prairie Village Police Department on this incident," Chief Lopez said in the release.
Johnson County Med-Act also responded on the call.

The victim's identity has not been released.

Prairie Village house fire

Firefighters from two area departments battled a house fire this morning in Prairie Village.

Residents of a home in the 8000 block of Windsor Street called 9-1-1 to report the fire shortly after 5 a.m. Monday.

Crews arrived to report heavy smoke and fire visible from the front of the single story residence. The residents of the home were able to safely evacuate the home prior to the fire department's arrival.

Several cats will killed in the fire.

The fire was reported to be under control at 5:47 a.m..

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
