Fairway Police are investigating after a driver was killed in a crash with a tree early Sunday morning.

A Westwood officer reported a vehicle failing to yield to him in the area of Shawnee Mission Parkway and Norwood Road around 2:20 a.m. The officer reported the vehicle was "in excess of 100 miles-per-hour."

The Westwood officer discontinued the pursuit, but continued to drive in the direction where the vehicle was headed.

The car was found crashed and on fire in the 5600 block of Norwood Road seconds later.

Fairway Police Chief Mike Fleming says the Westwood officer attempted to stop the vehicle for traffic charges on Shawnee Mission Parkway near Belinder. The driver pulled into a parking lot and then immediately back onto the street striking another vehicle on Shawnee Mission Parkway.

The driver then accelerated across Shawnee Mission Parkway and went south of Norwood Street at a very high rate of speed.

"In the 5600 block of Norwood the vehicle struck two parked cars and two trees before coming to a rest in the driveway of 5612 Norwood," according to Chief Fleming.

The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chief Fleming has identified the driver as Grant Oliver McClure, 26, of Overland Park, Kansas.

The Shawnee Police Department's traffic safety unit is handling the crash investigation.

Russell Stover Candies robbery

Fairway Police are investigating after a late morning armed robbery.

Police say around 11:40 a.m., a man entered the Russell Stover Candies store at 2814 Shawnee Mission Parkway and implied that the had a weapon, the employees did not see any weapons.

Police Chief Mike Fleming tells Operation 100 News that no one hurt and the suspect remains at large.

The suspect is only described as a black male with a thin build. He possibly fled the area in a smaller extended cab pickup truck, similar to a Ford Ranger.
