Lawrence shooting suspect charged with attempted murder; victim released from hospital

Douglas County prosecutors have charged Dashawn C. Clayborn, 22, of Kansas City, Kansas with attempted first-degree murder, automobile burglary, theft of a vehicle, attempting to elude police, criminal damage to property, and driving while his license was suspended.

Prosecutors allege that Clayborn was involved in a fight in the 3000 block of Steven Drive on January 30th. During the fight, Stephen Patterson, 27, of Lawrence, was shot twice.

Patterson was flown to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas with critical injuries.

According to a Lawrence Police Department news release, received on February 2nd, Stephen Patterson is no longer hospitalized.

My reporting partners at the Lawrence Journal-World report that Clayborn's bond has been set at $100,000.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has not released Dashawn Clayborn's booking photo.

Officers were called shortly before 12:40 Friday morning to the 3000 block of Steven Drive. On arrival officers located a person with a gunshot wound to the back and a second possible wound to the jaw.

Fire Medical crews reported the victim to be in critical condition and requested a Life Star helicopter to respond. The helicopter landed on the north side of West Middle School, 2700 Harvard Road, and transported the victim to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.

The Journal-World's Caitlin Doornbos was with police at the intersection of Wellington Road and Steven Drive, where officers used a public address speaker in attempt to contact anyone inside 3009 Steven Drive. An armored police vehicle arrived at the scene shortly before 2 a.m.

Police received a search warrant for the address around 3 a.m. and entered the home around 3:10.

Caitlin Doornbos reported that police searched the home, but did not find anyone inside.

Lawrence Police Department spokesperson Sergeant Trent McKinley says, "a 22-year-old, Kansas City, Kansas man was arrested shortly before 8 a.m. this morning following a vehicle pursuit on K-10 highway that ended near Eudora."

McKinley says around 7:40 a.m. officers received information on a vehicle, left running in a driveway near 24th and Alabama Streets, being stolen. An officer spotted the vehicle on East 23rd Street and attempted to stop it.

"A pursuit ensued, reaching speeds of approximately 100 miles-per-hour before the suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed near K-10 and Church Street in Eudora," McKinley said.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries sustained in the crash.

McKinley says, "the suspect will be transported to the Douglas County Jail on a number of charges, following his medical treatment."

VIDEO: Lawrence Police identify officers involved in Sunday's officer-involved shooting

June 24 update:

Operation 100's reporting partners at the Lawrence Journal-World report the man shot by officers is Lawrence resident Zach Ortiz, 24. Ortiz remains hospitalized in serious condition at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.

Lawrence Police have identified the officers involved in the incident. A statement released Tuesday afternoon says Officer Skyler Richardson contacted two people at 1103 Kasold Drive, one of those people was armed with a firearm. Police have not released the specific circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Officer Richardson is 23-years-old and has been with the Lawrence Police Department since June of 2013. Officer Terry Haak was the second officer to arrive at the address, shortly after Officer Richardson had shot the armed man. Officer Haak is 50-years-old and has been with the Lawrence Police Department since 1987. Both officers remain on paid administrative leave.

Lawrence Police Department spokesperson, Sergeant Trent McKinley says the Douglas County Sheriff's Office has requested the assistance of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office for additional investigative resources.

The Lawrence Journal-World reports on both Monday and Tuesday evenings, law enforcement personnel were seen outside the home on Kasold Drive investigating.

Lawrence Police are investigating after an officer-involved shooting early Sunday morning.

Police say they were called to the area of Harvard Road and Kasold Drive around 12:30 a.m. on a report of shots fired. The caller believed that the shots may have come from a home south of the intersection.

Arriving officers were directed to a residence at 1103 Kasold Drive where there was a disturbance. Officers contacted individuals, including a man with a gun. One officer shot the armed man.

Fire Medical crews responded and transported the injured man to a landing zone, where they were met by a LifeStar helicopter.

The helicopter transported the man, only described as a man in his 20's, to a Kansas City area hospital. The man was shot four or five times and was in critical condition at the time he was airlifted.

No other injuries were reported.

Sergeant Trent McKinley says, "both Lawrence police officers are on paid administrative leave, as per department policy. Their names are not being released at this time."

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is assisting with the investigation.

Lawrence man charged with attempted first-degree murder in Valentine's day shooting

Douglas County Prosecutors have charged a 34-year-old Lawrence man in connection with the Valentine's day shooting of another man in Lawrence.

Lawrence Police were called to L.R. "Dad" Perry Park, 1200 Monterey Way, by the shooting victim just before 2:15 a.m.. Officers located the victim inside his vehicle in the north parking lot of the park, near the intersection of Harvard Road and Lakecrest Road.

Medics reported the victim's injuries to be critical. The victim, later identified as 36-year-old Anthony Widsom, was transported to a Topeka area trauma center by a LifeStar helicopter. The helicopter landed in Lawrence in front of the Hy-Vee store near W. 6th Street & Monterey Way.

Sgt. Hayden Fowler with the Lawrence Police Department tells Operation 100 New partners at 6News that the victim was alert and able to tell police the name of the man who allegedly shot him. The suspect, J.D. Turner, and the victim knew each other and were involved in a verbal altercation before the shooting occurred.

Officers were familiar with alleged suspect and a vehicle he is known to drive. That vehicle was located at the Kwik Shop near 23rd & Harper just before 3 a.m.. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.

The victim remains hospitalized Friday afternoon.

After being interviewed, Turner was arrested and later booked into the Douglas County Jail. He faces a charge of attempted first-degree murder. His bond has been set at $250,000.
