The Shawnee Fire Department says a fire sprinkler prevented a careless cooking fire from spreading into a much bigger fire.

Firefighters responded to a first-floor apartment at 15710 West 65th Street in the Shawnee Station Apartments about 3:20 Friday afternoon.

Fire Marshal Corey Sands of the Shawnee Fire Department says a disabled woman and her teenagers escaped to their back patio when the fire broke out.

"One sprinkler activated and put out the fire," Sands said.

No one was injured. Damage is estimated at approximately $5,000.

The Shawnee Fire Department was assisted by the Overland Park and Lenexa fire departments along with Johnson County Med-Act.
