The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on Interstate 435 in Johnson County.

A Shawnee police officer reported the accident in the southbound lanes of Interstate 435 just before 10 p.m., about same time as emergency dispatchers say they started receiving 9-1-1 calls.

The officer reported a tractor trailer, partially in the median of the interstate, and several other vehicles stopped nearby.

Shawnee firefighters reported one person was found deceased in the middle of the interstate.

Troopers have identified the pedestrian as Shaun P. Robinson, 26, of Kansas City, Kansas.

Investigators say Robinson was walking westbound across the southbound lanes of the interstate when he was struck by a 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser and then several other vehicles.

The driver of the PT Cruiser has been identified as a 52-year-old Merriam woman. She was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries from the accident.

Troopers say that Robinson was driving a Nissan pickup truck southbound on I-435 when he rear ended a tractor-trailer. Robinson and the tractor-trailer both pulled to the shoulder of the interstate, when for an unknown reason, Robinson exited his vehicle and attempted to walk across the southbound lanes. He was then struck by the vehicles. The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured.

Authorities shutdown all southbound lanes of the interstate at Johnson Drive to investigate the accident and map the scene.

All lanes of the interstate reopened shortly after 4 a.m..

Troopers continue to investigate the accident and no other details have been released.
