Suspect in fatal hit-and-run formally charged

Suspect Formally Charged:

The Kansas Highway Patrol arrested 26-year-old, Brock James, around 9:30 Sunday evening, October 30th, at his Olathe home.

James was charged with failure to stop at accident with known death, a level 5 Felony charge, at his October 1st first appearance in court. Bond was set at $50,000.

County booking records show bond was posted on October 2nd.

James' next court date is October 11, at 10:30 a.m..

Victims Identified:

Authorities have identified, 41-year-old, Christopher P. Randolph of Kansas City, Missouri as the man killed in the accident. Charlesetta M. Redd, 39-year-old of Kansas City, Missouri, was also injured in the accident.

The Highway Patrol says Randolph was refueling a 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan in the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 when he was fatally struck by a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup truck. Investigators say the collision caused the Dodge mini van to strike and seriously injure the second pedestrian, Charlesetta Redd. Redd was transported to an area hospital by Johnson County Med-Act, where she has been treated and released.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating an early morning fatal accident on Interstate 35 in Lenexa.

Police say the accident was reported at 2:20, Saturday morning, in the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 just to the north of College Boulevard in the construction zone.

A witness tells Police that a subject was refueling a stalled van in the right lane and shoulder when that person was struck by a passing pickup truck. Another person, with the stalled van was also injured in the accident.


The person who was fueling the van was pronounced deceased at the scene, the other subject was transported to an area hospital in serious condition.

Officers reported the stalled van came to rest blocking the right and center lanes after being struck, and also had a driver's side door missing following the impact.

Olathe Police responded to the scene and closed all lanes of northbound Interstate 35 at 119th Street until crews from the Kansas Department of Transportation are able to respond.

Police searched for the driver of the pickup truck which was found abandoned, approximately three-quarters of a mile away, with heavy front end damage north of the accident scene. Lenexa Police deployed their K-9 unit in the area with assistance from Shawnee and Overland Park Police.

Troopers requested assistance from a helicopter from Kansas Highway Patrol Troop B or the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department however, no helicopters were available to respond.

The area search was cleared just after 4 a.m., with no one located. Police continue to check with businesses that are open in the area to see if anyone has seen the suspect driver.

Officers believe they have identified the registered owner of the suspect vehicle however, that subject has not been taken into custody at last check.

Kansas Department of Transportation crews arrived at 4:21 a.m. to takeover the task of keeping the northbound lanes closed at 119th Street.

All northbound lanes were reopened at 8 a.m., according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

One person airlifted following single vehicle accident in Lawrence

Lawrence Police are investigating after a single vehicle crash seriously injured one person this morning.

Police arrived on scene at the intersection of E 15th Street and Pennsylvania Street at 1:05 to report a mini van, "on its side and on top of a tree."

Officers reported the female driver of the vehicle fled from the scene on foot, and was last seen westbound. Police caught up with that subject later in the morning and have arrested her. She faces numerous charges including; Leaving the Scene of an Injury Accident, and Driving While Suspended. County booking records show she is being held on a $4600 bail.

One Medic unit was initially dispatched to the scene, and arrived to report the vehicle had sustained heavy damage. Medics requested a fire crew and rescue crew be added to the call, along with a LDCFM Division Chief.

Police at the scene reported a female with an apparent broken leg and hand.

A LifeStar Helicopter was requested to respond to the athletic field at South Junior High, 15th and Massachusetts Streets.

The injured female, only described as being a "21-year-old", was transported by LifeStar to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas after 2 a.m..

No other injuries were reported.

Fire and rescue crews remained on the scene until 2:12 a.m.. Police continue to investigate and have not released any other information as of this report.

Fatal accident in Johnson County

Overland Park Police Department's Traffic units are investigating after a car and motorcycle collided in the northbound lanes of Metcalf near 56th Street. Mission Police are assisting with traffic in the area.

The accident was reported before 4 p.m.. Police arrived quickly and reported heavy damage to the involved car.

Johnson County Consolidated Fire District No. 2 arrived on scene to report car versus motorcycle with major damage. Firefighters initially reported one victim in full cardiac arrest with CPR in progress, another person with critical injuries, and a third with serious injuries.

Crews pronounced one person deceased at the scene.

Authorities confirm that the motorcycle was traveling northbound on Metcalf, the car was southbound and making a left turn to eastbound 56th Terrace when the two collided, killing a front seat passenger in the car.

The man on the motorcycle, only described as being in his 20's, was critically injured. Investigators say the man was wearing a helmet. The driver of the car, described as being a "78-year-old male", was seriously injured.  Both were transported to an area hospital for further treatment.

Police have not released an details regarding the deceased victim, only to say that all involved parties are adults.

Overland Park Police and Public Works, with assistance from Mission Police, closed all lanes of northbound Metcalf Avenue between Johnson Drive and 53rd Street. Traffic on Metcalf was backed up to near Shawnee Mission Parkway. All lanes were reopened shortly after 9 p.m..

Investigators confirm the accident occurred in Overland Park. All lanes of Metcalf at 56th Street are within the city limits of Overland Park. Mission city limits begins just off of the east shoulder of Metcalf. Mission Police were the first to arrive at the scene.

SUV crashes into Johnson County home

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is investigating this morning after a Sport Utility Vehicle crashed into a residence on the northeast corner of 167th Street and Metcalf Avenue in Oxford Township.

Dispatchers say the crash was reported just before 8 a.m., at 16695 Metcalf Avenue.

Overland Park Firefighters arrived on scene to find the SUV under a collapsed deck. Crews reported the female driver would need to be extricated from the vehicle. The driver was said to be the only occupant of the vehicle. Her injuries are said to be serious. Rescue crews worked for about 15 minutes to extricate the injured driver.

Deputies reported the vehicle struck a deck before coming to rest against the home's foundation. A building inspector is said to be responding to check the integrity of the structure.

No other injuries were reported.

OPFD provides fire protection for this unincorporated area of county. The Overland Park city limits runs along Metcalf Avenue, everything to the west of Metcalf being in Overland Park.

This accident occurred approximately 100 yards from where another single vehicle accident occurred in June 2012. 23-year-old, Adam P. Baker was killed in that accident when his vehicle left the roadway and began lodged in a tree. More information on the previous accident can be found here.

Five assault rifles taken in September burglary, recovered

Olathe Police confirm they are investigating the Bass Pro Shop, 12051 South Renner Boulevard, was burglarized.

Officials say officers were dispatched on a commercial burglary alarm at 12:19 a.m.. Upon arrival officers located a broken window and signs of forced entry into the building.

Lenexa Police Department sent a K-9 unit to assist with the search of the building and surrounding area. No suspects were located in that initial search according to Police.

A couple hours later a Shawnee Police officer located a vehicle matching a description of a possible suspect vehicle and after making a vehicle stop, three males were taken into custody related to the burglary.

As of Monday afternoon, Police confirm that five assault rifles were stolen during the burglary. Authorities say all five of those weapons taken are AR-15's. Police have not released whether or not those assault rifles were recovered when three people of interest were apprehended by Shawnee Police.

Also this afternoon, booking records show three men have been arrested and booked into the County Jail on burglary charges. The three men range in age from 19-25 years old. The men have not been formally charged at this time.

Law Enforcement from across the area is converging on Lawrence, Kansas this morning as someone who KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little describes as "one of KU's most distinguished Alumni" returns to receive an award. Officers from several agencies including; the United States Secret Service, Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Lawrence Police, University of Kansas Public Safety, Kansas Highway Patrol, Johnson County Sheriff's Office, Olathe Police, and Lenexa Police are involved in providing security.

Juan Manuel Santos, president of the Republic of Colombia will be honored for his public service as part of a public event at the Dole Institute. He will be the recipient of the Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award, the most prestigious award given by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The 2:30 p.m. event is free and open to the public, with doors opening at 1 p.m.. Seating will be limited. Public parking is available only in the Lied lot south of Petefish Drive, across from the Dole Institute.

Santos earned degrees in economics and business at the University of Kansas in 1973.

Vacant house fire causes heavy damage and injures firefighter

Firefighters were called to an address in the 221 S Central Street in Olathe around 4:40 Tuesday morning.

Olathe Police arrived to find fire visible inside the home. A neighbor told officers that the previous resident had been evicted and no one is believed to be living at the address.

Responding firefighters reported smoke visible from Santa Fe Street (135th Street) and Interstate 35, approximately a third of a mile away. The first fire unit to arrive at the address reported the attached garage of the single story home was fully involved with flames visible through the roof.

Firefighters have conducted a primary and secondary search of the home and confirmed that there is no one inside.

Dispatchers confirm, the fire was declared "under control" at 5:06 a.m..

Olathe Fire officials confirm one firefighter was transported to an area hospital with a back injury. That injury is said to be non life-threatening. Officials say the fire appears to have sparked when the furnace's natural gas  line broke and was ignited by the water heater's pilot light. The fire caused approximately $80,000 in damages.

Firefighters were called back to the scene around 1:30 Tuesday morning afternoon. Dispatchers say that was a false alarm and the fire had not rekindled.

Driver critically injured in collision with bridge

A single vehicle crash critically injured one person this morning near Gardner.

Emergency Dispatchers say the accident was reported before 6:50 Monday morning. Johnson County Fire District No. 1 arrived to report a mini van had struck a bridge and sustained heavy damage.

Crews extricated one person from the vehicle. That person, only described as a "female in her 30's", who is said to have suffered critical injuries. She was transported to an area trauma center for treatment. The vehicle's airbags did deploy in the accident.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is investigating the crash. No other information is currently available.

Man critically injured after fall from balcony

Olathe Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a man's fall from a third floor balcony this morning.

Police say they were called to an address in the 400 block of W Poplar Street around 4:50 Monday morning. Officers received at least one report of a disturbance with possible gunshots heard, according to a source familiar with the incident.

Johnson County Med-Act and Olathe Fire responded to stage nearby until Police could confirm that the scene was safe for them to enter. When crews were allowed into the scene, they reported a male with critical injuries. The man, only described as being "approximately 40", was said to be alert and extremely combative with paramedics. He was transported to an area trauma center for further treatment.

Vehicle vs pedestrian accident in Johnson County

A man sustained serious injuries this morning when he was struck struck by a passing vehicle south of Olathe.

Deputies say around 3:40 they were called to the area of U.S. 169 Highway and 162th Street by a driver who reported striking a person while driving northbound near 167th Street. Authorities located a male pedestrian just of the 167th Street intersection, who told Deputies that he had been hit while walking southbound in the northbound lanes of traffic.

The Olathe Fire Department responded with Johnson County Med-Act and reported the victim's injuries to be serious. The vehicle's driver was "extremely shaken but, uninjured" according to a Deputy.

The man has only been described as being in his mid 30's. He has been transported to an area hospital for further treatment.

Northbound lanes of U.S. 169 Highway were closed briefly for accident investigation. Deputies say they continue to investigate the accident to see if alcohol may have been a contributing factor.

Several officers from the Olathe Police Department assisted the Sheriff's Office with the initial accident report.

Man critically injured after being struck by train in Johnson County

A man is in critical condition this morning after being struck by a train south of Olathe.

Officials say shortly before 3 a.m. a man was walking on the railroad tracks near U.S. 169 Highway south of 167th Street when he was struck by a train. Once the slow moving Burlington Northern Santa Fe train was able to stop, the engineer called for help and located the man, unconscious.

Sheriff's Deputies arrived on scene and confirmed the man was unconscious, but breathing. Firefighters from the Olathe Fire Department and Johnson County Fire District No. 2, along with Johnson County Med-Act arrived on scene and reported critical injuries.

The man, only described as being in his late 20's or early 30's was transported to an area trauma center for treatment.

Northbound lanes on U.S. 169 highway were closed for a short time while crews were on the scene. The highway has since reopened. All rail traffic is being diverted around the area as the investigation continues, according to a BNSF spokesperson.

The Sheriff's Office says the man's injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

No other information is currently being released. Authorities say they are investigating why the man was walking on the tracks and what, if any, role alcohol may have played in the accident.

Suspect arrested in Merriam shooting

Update: Merriam Police say the man who was shot early this morning, was asleep on the couch when he was shot by a roommate. The victim tells police that they had not been arguing and he does not know what led his roommate to shoot him.

Investigators say the victim is expected to fully recover from his injuries. The suspect was located in the hallway, outside of the apartment, when officers arrived at the scene.

One man was critically injured early Friday morning in a Merriam shooting.

Merriam Police were called to an address in the 7300 block of Brittany Street at 3:26 a.m. on a report of a shooting inside an apartment.

Officers arrived to find several subjects inside the apartment, one who had been shot at least once, the other subjects were detained.

The victim is described as a male in his early 50's with at least one gunshot wound to the left shoulder. His injuries are said to be critical. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Few details are currently being released as Police continue to investigate what led up to the shooting.

Several Shawnee officers responded and assisted Merriam in securing the scene.

Two found dead inside Leawood home

Leawood Police confirm they are investigating after officers found two people dead inside a home near 104th Street and High Drive before 2 p.m., Tuesday.

Police say they were called to the home after an "immediate family member" asked them to check the welfare of the residents who were not answering the door. Officers, along with Leawood Fire and Johnson County Med-Act responded to the address, where officers located two subjects, a man and a woman, deceased inside.

The cause of the deaths has not been released, although investigators say the deaths were not from natural causes. Officers say they are "not actively searching" for any suspects related to the deaths.

As of Tuesday night, Investigators say they are investigating the deaths as a Murder-Suicide. The subjects have only been identified as a man in his 50's and a woman in her 40's.

No other information is currently being released.

Shots fired call sparks death investigation

Olathe Police are investigating a death in the area of Frontier Park, 15501 W Indian Creek Parkway, this morning.

Police say they received reports of at least one gunshot heard in that area just after 6:30 Tuesday morning. Responding officers located a subject deceased on the Indian Creek Trail.

Officers ask the public to avoid the trail this morning while the investigation is underway.

No other details are currently being released.

Police pursuit ends in crash, critically injuring driver

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating following a high speed vehicle pursuit which ended when the suspect's vehicle rolled twice.

Troopers say the pursuit started on southbound Interstate 35 near College Boulevard and continued southbound through Olathe. The pursuit came to an end after the suspect lost control, first leaving the highway into the center median then over correcting, crossing all lanes of traffic. The vehicle then traveled up and back down an embankment, finally the vehicle rolled twice, pinning the driver inside. Troopers say the crash occurred at 11:47 p.m..

Initial reports to Operation 100 News indicated that pursuing officers reported speeds of more than 100 miles per hour and reaching 130 miles per hour at one point. Pursuing officers reported "very light" traffic conditions throughout the pursuit, according to recorded scanner audio.

As a result of the crash and investigation that followed, all southbound lanes of Interstate 35 were closed at Lone Elm Road. Fire crews from Johnson County Fire District No. 1 responded to the crash scene and reported one vehicle involved with "very heavy damage." Rescue crews worked for about 10 minutes to extricate the injured driver from the wreckage.

The driver of the vehicle has been identified as, 26-year-old, Christopher A. Moore of Shawnee, Kansas. A source familiar with the crash confirms to Operation 100 News that Moore was critically injured in the single vehicle crash and transported to an area hospital for treatment. Troopers have also confirmed that they do not believe that Moore was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

As of this report there has been no confirmation as to which agency initiated the vehicle pursuit or what charges Mr. Moore was facing when the pursuit began.
