Fatality accident involving a motorcycle

Posted: 12:41 a.m.
Updated: 6:13 a.m.

Updated information is available here.

Merriam Police and the Kansas Highway Patrol are investigating a fatality accident on southbound Interstate 35, between Shawnee Mission Parkway and 67th Street.

The accident occurred just before 12:30 a.m. and involves a tractor trailer versus a motorcycle. According to a witness at the scene the "motorcycle pulled in front of the tractor trailer, the trucker blew his horns just before the two hit." That same witness advised Operation 100 News that several other tractor trailers have stopped near the scene and the driver of the involved truck "looks to be extremely upset".

A Merriam Police Officer located the accident and immediately requested more units to respond to assist and shut down all traffic on southbound I-35 at Shawnee Mission Parkway. A Med-Act ambulance traveling down the highway stopped to assist the Police Department and evaluated the victim who was confirmed to be deceased at the scene.

Initial reports indicated that the victim was underneath the tractor trailer.

Merriam Police and the Kansas Highway Patrol are investigating. KDOT crews are on scene assisting with blocking the southbound lanes of the interstate.

A Kansas Highway Patrol dispatcher says that "I-35 will remain closed for an extended period of time."

All southbound lanes were reopened to traffic at 6:10 a.m. Kansas Highway Patrol Troopers are currently working on notifying the next of kin. No further details are being confirmed by the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Operation 100 News will have the latest updates as soon as new details are confirmed by investigators.
