Deceased Man Identified in Olathe Officer Involved Shooting

Story Update: March 31, 2011: The deceased individual has been identified as 20 year old Carlos Villegas Jr. The assault victim remains in a local hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

Original Story:
At approximately 10 p.m. on Tuesday, March, 29th Olathe Police were dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of N. Logan Street after a report of an armed disturbance.

The first Officer to arrive was confronted by an armed man, who was assaulting another man inside the house. The Officer shot the armed man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The assaulted victim was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for multiple stab wounds sustained during the initial incident.

No other injuries were reported.

The Officer involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation by the Johnson County Mult-Jurisdictional Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Team. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to call 913-895-6300.

Story Update: The stabbing victim remains in Critical condition at a local hospital this morning.

Olathe Police seeking the public's assistance with Tammy Cochran Homicide Investigation

Tammy K. Cochran's body was found by Olathe Police on March 5th, 2008 near the Olathe Water Production Plant (8255 S. Gardner Road). Ms. Cochran (age 37) had been burned and the incident has been investigated as a homicide.

Three years have passed with more than 25 detectives and criminal analysts continue to investigate and research leads. In the first few weeks of the investigation, over 180 leads were investigated. Currently over 220 leads have been investigated.

Video surveillance pictures were recovered from a Metro area convenience store showing Ms. Cochran on 2/29/08 at approximately 10:30 p.m. She was last reported to be wearing a dark blue or black jacket with a fuzzy collar, blue jeans with a design on the rear pocket, black tennis shoes and a light v-neck top.




This case remains open and is an active investigation.

Ms. Cochran had been reportedly seen in both Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas as well as other cities in the KC Metro area.

The reward in this case is now $18,000.

Missing Overland Park Man Found

Overland Park Police said today that Missing 74 year old, John J. Pappas, who suffers from Dementia, has been located in Gladstone, Missouri.

Police are not commenting on the circumstances of how Pappas was located.

The Overland Park Police Department is asking for the public's help in locating 74 year old John J. Pappas, who has been diagnosed with Dementia.

A Police Department News Release states that Pappas was last seen at his Overland Park Home around 11:15 p.m. on Friday.

Pappas was last known to be driving a White 2007 Ford Taurus with Kansas license plates QJY030. The vehicle also has a mirrored Kansas State University tag on the front bumper with the Wildcat logo.

Police also say that Pappas was wearing large-framed eyeglasses, a long-sleeved gray shirt, blue jeans and a blue, down-filled jacket. He has also been known to wear a baseball cap.

Lawrence Sister City Advisory Board Encourages Residents to help with Japanese Disaster Relief Efforts

(Lawrence, Kan.) – The City of Lawrence’s Sister City in Hiratsuka, Japan sustained minor damage in last week’s devastating earthquake. As a Sister City to Hiratsuka and to the Japanese people, the Lawrence Sister City Advisory Board has handled numerous requests regarding disaster relief efforts and how local residents can work to assist the Japanese people in the process of recovery and rebuilding.
 
“I would like to take a moment to recognize the victims and survivors of the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan,” said Mayor Mike Amyx. “As the world reaches out to the Japanese people, I urge the citizens of Lawrence to find ways to help the global community and assist Japan as they begin to rebuild their nation’s infrastructure and engage in the healing process that will be necessary to cope with a tragedy of this magnitude.”
 
Sister City Advisory Board Chairman Bill Keel said: “On behalf of the City of Lawrence and our community, we are grateful that our Sister City and cherished friends in Hiratsuka are not experiencing the full force of this tragedy. Our recommendation for those who want to help is to make a charitable contribution to one of the charities we’ve identified.”

·         CARE is one of the world’s largest private international humanitarian organizations. Their offices in Asia are on high alert and have ensured that staff is informed of the tsunami warnings and other related developments, www.care.org/.
·         GlobalGiving is working with International Medical Corps, Save the Children, and other organizations on the ground to disburse funds to organizations providing relief and emergency services to victims of the earthquake and tsunami. Donors can text JAPAN to 50555 to give $10, and larger increments can be submitted on GlobalGiving’s web site, www.globalgiving.org/.
·         The Salvation Army is encouraging donors to text JAPAN or QUAKE to 80888 to make a $10 donation. (Make sure to respond “YES” to the Thank You message you receive.) Donations can also be made on the organization’s web site,http://blog.salvationarmyusa.org/.

Utility Work on 9th Street

Lawrence, Kansas -- Today, March 18th from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Eastbound traffic on 9th Street between Ohio and Tennessee Streets will be limited to one lane. A utility contractor will be working in the area. Traffic will also be restricted from making right hand turns at Tennessee Street. Westbound traffic will not be affected.

Daylight Savings Time

Daylight Savings Time resumes early Sunday morning at 2am local time.

Clocks and other timing devices are set an hour ahead.

Area Fire Departments also recommend that you check and replace your smoke alarms batteries as we move the clocks ahead one hour. Smoke alarm batteries should be replaced at least once every year and checked that the are in proper working order at least once every month.
